Festive Ice Skating at Caerphilly Castle

An undercover ice-rink has been set up within the grounds of Wales largest castle, Caerphilly Castle.  We were kindly invited by Cadw to attend the festivities on the opening night.  The ice rink opened on 23rd November and will be open for the next two weeks until Sunday 9th December.  It is open from mid-day to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends.  Find out how we got on Ice skating at Caerphilly Castle by having a look at our short video below.

On its final weekend, you will also be able to visit Father Christmas at his medieval grotto.  As you can see, we had lots of fun ice skating at Caerphilly Castle, mainly from being in hysterics at watching my son fall all over the place.

The ice-rink itself is quite small, perfect for novice skaters, but I don’t think it would impress any budding Torvill and Deans.  But as we are all beginners at best, it was ideal for us.  There were also penguins available to help out little ones.  You can hold on to the penguins and push them around to help you balance on the ice.

The ice-rink is covered, which considering our predictable weather, can only be a good thing.  The downside is that you miss out on the wonderful views of the Castle when you skate.  Saying that the whole ambience and setting is still beautiful and the lighting in the ice-rink is lovely.  Outside of the ice-rink the kids were captivated by the lit up castles and the what they called the Welsh leaning tower of Pisa.

In terms of facilities there was a small snack bar where you could pick up some refreshments and a well stocked shop which had some lovely gifts for Christmas.

In the evening there is no access to the Castle itself, but if you were to visit during the day, you could combine with a trip to the Castle (at an extra admission cost).  As the castle is right in the centre of the market town of Caerphilly you could also combine with a visit to the town and its Christmas market.
