We headed to Carmarthen, which claims to be one of the oldest towns in Wales, with an expectation to have a lunch in one of its quaint Welsh cafes serving up bowls of cawl. Instead we stumbled across Florentinos, an Italian restaurant serving up generous portions of pasta and pizzas cooked in their wood fired pizza oven!
Based down a little side street, Florentino’s is a quaint Italian restaurant with exposed brick and painted blue wood panelling, with just a few tables downstairs and not many more upstairs. Small it may be, but it is big on flavour.
The restaurant didn’t have a childrens menu but they did offer anything from the main menu as a smaller portion. They said they could also make a tomato based pasta sauce.
We opted for a bottle of house red, which was an easy enough drinking chianti. For starter we choose the garlic pizza bread, cooked in their wood fired pizza oven.
When the bread came it was dripping in garlic butter and seasoned well with sea salt. So simple, and yet so tasty. There was also mounds of it, which I should have resisted, but I couldn’t, so it meant that I then struggled to eat my main!
For my main I had Spaghetti Vongole, which was rammed full of juicy clams. The spaghetti was homemade, and it tasted that way, so much nicer than the usual dried variety. The pasta was swimming in a garlic buttery sauce, with a hint of chill which was gorgeous.
Again the portion was generous and after the bread I could not finish it, and that was despite my youngest trying to help me polish it off.
My husband had the mushroom risotto, which he said was really tasty, light rice and comforting with an earthiness from the mushrooms. The only thing I found funny on the plates were the bunny rabbit ears of two pieces of cos lettuce!
My youngest who was with us (as the boys were in school) had a ham and mushroom pizza. When it came it was presented in the shape of a heart. It was a little lost on her but we thought it was a lovey touch.
The service was very friendly and attentive throughout. Every time they walked past our table they made a fuss of our little one and treated her like a little princess. It was a relaxed atmosphere, a lovely buzz in the restaurant and we weren’t rushed at all.
If you are ever in the area I would thoroughly recommend Florentinos, although I would probably book for a weekend or an evening based on our experience, I’m sure it gets very busy and is probably very popular.
